Synopsis: The Gunmen investigate the shooting death of a professional blackmailer who was once Byers' college roommate, and are smitten with the victim's sister, who appeals to them to find her brother's killer. But after uncovering incriminating evidence, the Gunmen are shocked when clues lead them to FBI Assistant Director Skinner. But they are soon caught in a web of lies and discover that all is not what it appears to be.

- Mitch Pileggi plays Assistant Director Walter Skinner on "The X-Files," for which "The Lone Gunmen" was spawned. Although he shared the mutual friends of Mulder and Scully, for many years he did not know about the Lone Gunmen, but he met them in "The X-Files" movie and recently has gone to them for help on his own in the series.
- Guest star Catherine Dent currently plays Janice Talbert on the series "One Life to Live." However, fans of "The X-Files" will recognize her as June Gurwitch from the episode "Trevor." Also, Raoul Ganeev appeared in "The X-Files" episode "Patient X."
- The title refers to Neil Jordan's 1992 smash hit, "The Crying Game." There was a wonderful conspiracy of silence among those who had seen it early, with everyone admitting there was quite a surprise in the storyline but nobody eager to give it away and spoil the shocker moment.
- The song used near the end of this episode was "Rum and Coca Cola" by The Andrews Sisters.
